Sketches for a new group of work

I know i havent been posting much ... School is very demanding. However here are preliminary sketches for a  set of oil paintings which i will be working on through out the next two months. These were made from pictures which i made while traveling in Colombia.

This set is  a little bit more conceptual rather than literal.

Storyboard 1

School is keeping me busy and creative. We have a book illustartion class in which we will be creating a book dummy alon with a book cover and some spreads for the interior. I chose a story by Ray Bradburry "The Pedestrian" which is a rather odd choice for a 32 page children book however the story is amazing and moody and so deep that I think every kid should have one of these in their library. So here is the first page of my storyboard. I will be posting the rest for the next couple of days.

Alone

I saw this homeless guy last winter on train. Because of his occupation no one wanted to sit next to him. I don't know why but the image struck me and I took a quick picture of him, thinking that hopefully one day I can use it for something.

This semester in one of my classes the professor gave us an assignment to do an oil painting featuring a figure in a state of deep emotion and immideatly thought of the guy on the C train. Looking closer at the photo I realized that he had a wedding band on his finger. I wondered what had happened to his wife., why he never pawned his ring, what is his story. The empty space next to him now was reminicent of a broken umbrella - a torn apart alone human being.

Sketch and idea approved, I am moving on the next round of a refined sketch and the painting.

Pigling Bland

So school is full throttle.
We are bombarded with all sorts of projects. This is one of them - an illustration to one of Beatrix Potter's books other than "Peter the Rabbit". I picked the tale of Pigling Bland, a story about a very proper piglet who went to the market to find a job bit got lost along the way  and found refuge on a farm of Mr. Piperson, who was ready to turn Pigling Bland into bacon and other things. At the farm Pigling Bland meets Pig-wig, a Berkshire piglet and they escape together into the wild.

I have decided to concentrate on the background imagery and chose a passage about Pigling Bland being lost in the dark and scary woods.

Here are the preliminary sketches. Let's see where this all will take me!

Olaf and Mandy

These two came out of nowhere. Well, out of  2b and 3b pencils marks rather.

They said their names are Mandy and Olaf and they have been friends since childhood. One unfortunate day they got separated by a storm and it took them a lot of dangerous escapades and nearly a life time to find each other once again. Now that Mandy and Olaf have found their way back to one another, they decided to always hold hands, so that nothing can make pull them apart. Because it is a lonely and dangerous world out there and it is so much better to walk through life hand in hand with a friend.

And so they said their thank yous for listening to their story and their good byes and continued on walking, hand in hand. I wished them the best of luck. Because it is a dangerous and a lonely world out there.
