Building a portfolio takes more than just making good pieces—it takes structure, clarity, and support along the way.
The Mini Mentorship is a short-term, focused program designed for high school and college students who want to strengthen their ideas, build creative confidence, and shape a portfolio that feels authentic and intentional.
Over the course of 6–8 weeks, we’ll meet for three private sessions focused entirely on where you are—and where you want to go.
✔️ 3 private Zoom sessions (45–60 minutes each)
✔️ Personalized guidance on portfolio structure, idea development, and creative direction
✔️ Email check-ins and feedback between sessions to keep momentum going
✔️ Practical, supportive next steps after each meeting
I know how overwhelming it can feel when you're building a portfolio for the first time—or trying to turn scattered pieces into something that feels strong and personal.
As a professional illustrator and educator, I’ve helped many young artists find clarity in their work, strengthen their ideas, and grow their creative voice with confidence.
This mentorship is designed to meet you where you are—offering thoughtful feedback, real-world insight, and encouragement to help you take meaningful steps forward.
“Freelance illustration can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling — but also volatile and unpredictable. Whether you're just starting out or pivoting directions, Deena is one of the most focused and persistent illustrators I know.
I first met Deena when I came from India to attend the SVA Illustration Summer Residency, and we've stayed in touch ever since. She's incredibly patient with peers and students, but also honest about what the illustration industry demands.
Figuring out where your skills and interests fit in this field is a deeply personal journey. Deena brings experience across editorial illustration, publishing, and teaching — and she's deeply connected to a global community of working illustrators. If you're looking for insight into both illustration as a practice and a profession, Deena is an amazing mentor.” Ishita Jain, illustrator and SVA faculty
“Deena is a seasoned creative with deep industry knowledge and a clear, generous vision. Her insight and guidance are invaluable for taking a project—or a career—to the next level.” Manuela Marazzi, children’s book illustrator.
